Speaker: Benjamin Collas (Kyoto University)

Title: Oda's prediction in Galois-Teichmüller theory, 
a motivating conjecture in arithmetic, geometry, and topology.  
 
Abstract:  
Originating from Grothendieck's ``Esquisse d'un programme'', Galois-Teichmüller 
theory exploits the geometric properties of families of curves for the study of 
the absolute Galois group of rational numbers.  
 
Oda's prediction (OP; MPI Bonn 1993), which emanates from the encounter of 
this program with Ihara's one, has since acted as a motivating conjecture 
in arithmetic geometry --  in terms of braid group, divisorial arithmetic, or 
combinatorial anabelian geometry (resp. Matsumoto and Takao, Ihara-Nakamura, and 
Hoshi-Mochizuki), but also in low-dimensional topology (Johnson homomorphism and 
Morita's obstruction; Morita, Nakamura, Hain, Takao et al.)  
 
The goal of this talk is to provide a panorama of techniques and results, 
including an original approach via stack Galois-Teichmüller theory, of OP. 
This talk will also serve as a preparation for Philip's talk on the application 
of (hidden) stack arithmetic to Oda's prediction.
